Sometimes the simplest and cheapest tools can save us a lot of time and money down the road. Even Central Florida insurance agents are guilty of not taking their own advice to prevent extensive damage! Today I would like to discuss three simple and inexpensive tools that can prevent or at least minimize damage in your home.
Fire Extinguisher
It may seem simple enough, but a fire extinguisher could be the difference between not even needing to file a claim at all and having to rebuild your home. Not only should you have a fire extinguisher in your home, but it should be easily accessible and also maintained (and maybe even replaced if it has an expiration date!).
Safe or Lock Box
Another easy tool for protecting your assets is a safe. This seems to be a tool that either gets forgotten or isn't used effectively. I had a client not too long ago who had his safe stolen right out of his home with about $2,000 worth of collectible coins in it! Make sure that if you have a safe or are planning on purchasing one, it is bolted to your home. A safe does you no good if a thief can pick it up and carry it out of your home. A properly installed safe will not only protect your valuables, but it can also protect your hard-to-replace documents like a deed, Social Security cards, or passports.
Surge Protection
Surge protectors is another tool that is often forgotten about. If your home and your electronics are not protected, it could cost you thousands in the event of a lightning strike or electrical surge. Something most people don't realize is that most electrical surge damage is from within the home! So you should not only look into getting surge protection at your main breaker panel outside, but also take precautions to protect your appliances and electronics even from within.
All of these tools can usually be purchased for less than $500 each, but could end up saving you thousands – or, in some cases, save your irreplaceable keepsakes! I highly recommend if you are a homeowner that you have all three in your home, and be sure to install them correctly.
