The summer months are upon us! In Florida, that means keeping busy (and cool) with plenty of water-related activities. The Central Florida region is surrounded by lakes and oceans that are waiting for you to explore. From the most seasoned boater to the newbies, there are a few things you should always keep in mind before getting out on the water.
Be mindful of the weather
We live in Florida, so the weather can change on a dime, especially during the summer months. With that being said, make sure to check your local weather station for the daily forecast. When you’re out on the water, pay close attention to the weather patterns. If it’s looking dark, it’s best to head inland. As a rule of thumb, make sure to let someone on land know when you’ll be arriving back, that way they can alert authorities if something were to go wrong.
Always drive sober
On land or water, driving any motorized vessel under the influence is a bad idea. When you drink and drive, you are putting those around you in danger. The probability of being involved in a boating accident doubles when alcohol is involved , and studies have shown that sun and wind exacerbate the effects of alcohol.
Consider a free vessel safety check
Take advantage of a free vessel safety check from the US Coast Guard. They offer complimentary boat examinations to verify the presence and condition of certain safety equipment required by state and federal regulations. Free of charge, they’ll provide a specialist to check out your boat and make helpful boating safety tips and recommendations. They also offer virtual online safety checks!
Make sure you’re covered
Though the state of Florida does not require boat insurance, that doesn't mean you don’t need it. Banks will often require that insurance is purchased for your boat if you have taken out a loan on it. It’s not uncommon for marinas to need proof of insurance, too. So if you’re looking to store your boat, you likely won’t be able to unless you have a policy.
