With the 2020 election right around the corner, we're exploring what insuring the country’s most famous house, the White House, would look like. Since the US Government is "self-insured,” they have no commercial insurance or really any need for it. Any damage, lawsuits, necessary repairs, or expenses are paid for by US Government resources. So, insurance policies for the White House are unnecessary, but let’s explore some possible coverage options the White House could need...
The first thing that would need to be kept in mind is the value of the White House. According to Zillow, it’s roughly estimated at $389 million, a steep price tag! With such a high estimated value, you could expect a very high monthly premium cost.
Since the United States Government conducts business out of the White House and the first family resides there, it would need a renters policy (only four years or eight for each tenant) in addition to business insurance. There’s some additional coverage that the White House would need. Let’s not forget the burning of Washington during the War of 1812. The British nearly destroyed all of the White House and many other government buildings. So, needless to say, we don’t want history to repeat itself. It’d be a good idea to add on a flood insurance policy, too.
Not only has the White House been a target in past wars, but recently for potential terrorist activity. Taking out a terrorism insurance policy is necessary. For those not familiar, terrorism insurance is purchased by property owners to cover their potential losses and liabilities that might occur due to terrorist activities. Coverage can include damaged or destroyed property, including buildings, equipment, furnishings, and inventory.
